How difficult would it be to swap the VW 2.5 Inline 5 into a Scirocco?
Forget speed, I'd do it for the sound alone.

The VR5 thing from the a us VW? Not that hard, but why would you? Just get a 3.6 VR6 instead :)

Not worth the effort unless it's the Audi RS version of the I5.

The US-market 5 cylinder is a proper inline 5, rather than a VR5. They're not that well-loved over here – they're thirsty, heavy and a bit unrefined, and I believe that they're phasing them out in favour of a turbocharged four-pot. That said, my wife's Golf has the inline 5, and I rather like it. 170hp is plenty in a car that small, and for all its unrefined nature, it makes a fantastic sound when you give it the works.

They've found a way to stuff a I5 in a NEW FWD VW? Holy crap... I Love the I5's :)

I've always thought the same thing. We have a MkV Jetta with the 2.5 and I love how it sounds.

If I'm not mistaken the only Golf/Jetta in the Euro market that came with a 5 cylinder engine was the mk4, so over a decade ago.
I like the idea but I get why we haven't been getting them here. Too "thirsty, heavy and a bit unrefined".

Bulb light and airbag fault light on? That could have been my Jetta this week. Stupid VW electrical systems...

Reminds me of my MKII with a 2.0 16v.. 200 HP you say, YUP... had them.. 220 KM/H top speed... Stupid? Sure, I was only 21.

That must've been a blast. My mkII only had 54 HP, despite not being a diesel. Even now both my current driveable cars are considered sporty but don't have that much power. To be fair, the 205 GTi does weigh considerably less than a mkII Golf with a 2.0 and my 406c can come close to that 220 top speed.

It was a blast, 2.0 litre block from a MKIII, the top from a MKII KR, insane cams... Way to powerful for a 21 year old really..

Same applied to the V5 - too much thirst, too much CO2 for the current market. It vanished years ago with rather muted regrets at its passing.

It's not even stuffed in there; there's more room under a Golf/Jetta I5 equipped car than Japanese and American cars with I4's. German engineers are the best.

Funnily enough, we own two transverse inline-5 cars (the Golf, and my Volvo 850R), and they've both got a remarkable amount of room under the bonnet. Witchcraft, if you ask me, but I'm glad that they did it!
I'll be sad to see the VW I5 go. For the US market, it made a lot of sense – uncomplicated, and making plenty of power without resorting to high states of tune. Plus, that sound is addictive!
